Following the recent appointment of Anup Sridhar as interim coach, Indian badminton star PV Sindhu has enhanced her coaching team by bringing in former South Korean badminton great Lee Hyun Il as a consulting coach.
This strategic addition comes just ahead of Sindhu’s much-anticipated return to competition at the Finland Open and Denmark Open in October 2024. The decision to revamp her coaching staff follows the end of Coach Agus Dwi Santoso’s contract with the Sports Authority of India.
Sindhu aims to streamline her traveling team and is looking for a coach who can actively spar with her and contribute to her daily training. As a result, the current coaching arrangement with Anup Sridhar and Lee Hyun Il will serve as an interim setup until December 2024.
Lee, a former World No. 1 and Sindhu’s teammate in the Premier Badminton League (PBL), brings a wealth of international experience and a reputation for thorough preparation.
Together with Sridhar, they form a dynamic coaching pair, combining tactical insight and extensive knowledge of the sport. Both coaches will play a crucial role in Sindhu’s preparations as she embarks on her post-Olympic campaign, focusing on enhancing her skills for the upcoming European circuit. “I’m excited to have Anup and Lee Hyun Il on my team during this pivotal time,” Sindhu expressed. “Anup’s deep understanding of Indian badminton and his strategic mindset have always impressed me, and I look forward to collaborating with him closely.
Having Lee, with his exceptional attention to detail and legendary experience, is a true privilege. I’ve always admired his preparation, and I’m eager to learn from him in the coming months,” she added.
This coaching reshuffle marks a significant chapter in Sindhu’s journey as she looks to build on her performance following the Paris 2024 Olympics. The interim arrangement will support her during this transition, with a permanent coaching decision anticipated by December 2024.
