France solidified their status as an emerging power by defeating three-time Suhandinata Cup champions Korea in the battle for positions 9-16 at the BWF World Junior Mixed Team Championships 2024.
After narrowly missing out on the quarterfinals, France delivered an impressive performance against Korea, winning all ten of their matches. Arthur Tatranov (men’s singles), Malya Hoareau (women’s singles), Tom Lalot Trescarte/Thibault Gardon (men’s doubles), Elsa Jacob/Camille Pognante (women’s doubles), and Trescarte/Jacob (mixed doubles) were all exceptional, leading France to a convincing victory with a score of 110-93.
“This is the first time France has beaten Korea, making it a historic moment for us. Our players executed their roles perfectly, and we’re thrilled. I’m pleased with my two matches; it bodes well for the future,” said Hoareau. “We believed we could win the quarterfinals, and losing to Chinese Taipei was tough. But we maintained our motivation for today’s match. After yesterday’s setback, we were determined to move forward and take pride in our performance.”
Meanwhile, at the top of the draw, heavyweights China, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Japan secured their spots in the semifinals.
China showcased their strength by decisively defeating Chinese Taipei 110-74. In the semifinals, the hosts will face Malaysia, who easily handled Denmark with a score of 110-85.
Japan found themselves in a tight match against a determined USA team, which had previously triumphed over Thailand in their group. The USA stayed within striking distance, but Niina Matsuta provided some breathing room in the second women’s singles, defeating Ella Lin and putting Japan ahead 99-83. The men’s doubles team of Kenta Matsukawa and Yuto Nakashizu then sealed the victory against Weslie Chen and Kai Chong, finishing 110-88.
In the semifinals, Japan will take on Indonesia, who had a commanding win against India, finishing 110-92.
