Team USA has officially announced a major change at the helm of its men’s basketball program. Steve Kerr, who recently stepped down as head coach, will be succeeded by Erik Spoelstra.
Spoelstra, who served on Kerr’s coaching staff during the 2024 Olympic Games—where Team USA captured the gold medal—will now lead the national team as it begins preparations for the 2027 FIBA World Cup and the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
USA Basketball director Grant Hill emphasized that Spoelstra’s promotion reflects the organization’s succession strategy, noting that Kerr himself rose to the position after working as Gregg Popovich’s assistant.
