Hamzah Sheeraz could face Jaime Munguia when he returns to the ring in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, early next year, according to his manager, Spencer Brown.
Brown, founder of Goldstar Promotions, told Boxing News that several names, including Callum Simpson and Diego Pacheco, had been considered for Sheeraz’s next bout. With Pacheco now scheduled to face Kevin Lele Sadjo on December 13, Munguia (45-2, 35 KOs) and Simpson have emerged as the more likely opponents for the unbeaten super-middleweight (22-0-1, 18 KOs).
Munguia’s potential involvement adds intrigue, given his controversial Voluntary Anti-Doping Agency (VADA) test earlier this year. The former world super-welterweight champion tested positive for exogenous testosterone shortly after a wide unanimous decision victory over Bruno Surace in May. Both his A and B samples confirmed the result, but the British Boxing Board of Control accepted “accidental exposure” as the explanation, allowing Munguia to avoid any sanction.
If Munguia is selected, nothing would prevent him from returning to the ring in February, coinciding with Sheeraz’s planned comeback.
Sheeraz comes off a dominant fourth-round stoppage of Edgar Berlanga in July, which propelled him into the global super-middleweight conversation. Currently, he is ranked number two by the WBC, just ahead of Munguia, while Christian Mbilli holds the sanctioning body’s interim title.
