An unexpected showdown between Harlem Eubank and Jamel Herring is reportedly in the works, as Herring hints at a potential return from retirement.
The former world super-featherweight champion took to social media yesterday to confirm he is in talks for a fight against Eubank, who holds a record of 21-1 (9 KOs), in London.
“I just got a call to fight Harlem Eubank in London [at] 140lbs,” Herring (24-5, 12 KOs) posted on X. “Ehh… I’ll think it over.” Herring enjoyed a solid run as WBO super-featherweight champion after winning the title in 2019, successfully defending it three times against notable opponents such as Lamont Roach Jr and Carl Frampton.
However, his reign ended after a loss to Shakur Stevenson in 2021, followed by defeats to Jamaine Ortiz and Jackson Jon England, before retiring last year.
Although traditionally a tall and imposing super-featherweight, the 39-year-old Herring would likely face a significant physical disadvantage if he steps back into the ring against Eubank.
Eubank, 31, recently suffered a technical decision loss to Jack Catterall after an accidental head clash caused cuts on both fighters. Despite the defeat, Eubank has maintained his goal of becoming a world champion, even though his last three fights have been at 147lbs.
Before earning another shot at a world title, it seems Eubank is interested in testing himself against a veteran like Herring, who may no longer be at his peak.
If the fight comes together, it is expected to take place on the undercard of the highly anticipated Chris Eubank Jr vs. Conor Benn II bout, scheduled for November 15 at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London.
