After a frustrating and winless 2025, Martin Bakole is looking to reignite his heavyweight campaign when he returns to the ring in January 2026, with his trainer Billy Nelson confirming plans for the Congolese contender’s comeback in Saudi Arabia.
Bakole (21-2, 16 KOs) endured a difficult year that began with a disastrous short-notice bout against Joseph Parker in February, where he was stopped inside two rounds. Ten weeks later, he returned to Riyadh but produced a lackluster performance against Efe Ajagba, resulting in a majority draw that did little to restore his former aura of danger.
Once regarded as one of boxing’s most avoided heavyweights, Bakole’s reputation as a “bogeyman” has taken a significant hit. Matchmakers who once steered clear of his name may now see him as a beatable opponent — though that renewed willingness could, ironically, give Bakole more opportunities to fight.
Still, it may take just one dominant victory to restore the hesitation that once surrounded his name. That chance could come in January, when Bakole is expected to appear on what would be his fifth consecutive card backed by Turki Al-Alshikh.
“Martin fights in Saudi in January according to our promoter,” Nelson confirmed.
Following criticism of his conditioning in the Ajagba fight, Bakole has reportedly enlisted a nutritionist and dietician to help improve his preparation and physique. Observers will be eager to see whether those adjustments translate into a sharper, more disciplined performance.
As for potential opponents, Deontay Wilder has also hinted at a January return, while a rematch with Ajagba remains a possibility given both fighters’ current availability.
