Shakur Stevenson dominated Teofimo Lopez at the weekend, securing a decisive victory and reflecting on his opponent’s abilities.
The newly crowned WBO super-lightweight champion earned a unanimous 119-109 decision on all three scorecards, dropping just one round—the eighth—while showcasing his superior skill set. Many had expected Lopez to pose a significant challenge, but Stevenson’s performance made the gap clear. Looking ahead, Stevenson may return to lightweight in search of title unifications or move up to welterweight for a high-profile bout with Conor Benn, meaning his time in the 140lb division could end without a title defense.
Lopez, meanwhile, is considering a move to 147 pounds to chase a three-division world championship. However, with his last five super-lightweight wins coming by decision, questions remain about whether he has the power to succeed at a higher weight.
In an interview with Ring Magazine, Stevenson praised Lopez’s attributes, noting the 28-year-old’s speed and power: “He is a tough fighter, he got power too, speed too.”
Stevenson later reiterated that praise on social media after reviewing the fight. According to Compubox, Lopez landed just 15% of his punches (72 out of 468), though nearly 80% of those were power shots (56).
Still, Lopez will need to ensure his punches carry greater impact against bigger opponents if he hopes to achieve success in a third division, as power will be the key challenge.
