The long-running saga surrounding the Subriel Matias vs. Dalton Smith world title fight finally appears close to resolution, with reports indicating that a date and venue have been confirmed for the showdown.
After months of uncertainty, Matias’ promoter, Fresh Productions, is said to have secured the Barclays Center in New York for January 10. The bout will see Puerto Rico’s Matias, 23-2 (22 KOs), defend his WBC super-lightweight title against unbeaten British challenger Smith, 18-0 (13 KOs).
Originally, the fight was expected to take place on November 22, a date first suggested by Turki Alalshikh shortly after Matias captured his belt in July. However, after the matchup went to a purse bid, Fresh Productions emerged victorious, earning the rights to stage the event. Since then, several proposed dates have come and gone, but January now looks set to be the final landing spot.
According to Boxing Scene, a press conference is scheduled for November 10 at the Barclays Center to formally announce the fight. Details regarding broadcast partners in both the U.S. and U.K. remain unconfirmed, though BoxRec currently lists the bout under “ppv.com.”
In the ring, the matchup represents the toughest test of Smith’s career to date. The 28-year-old Sheffield native’s most notable win came in 2023, when he stopped veteran Jose Zepeda in five rounds, followed by routine victories over Walid Ouizza and Mathieu Germain.
Matias, meanwhile, has faced a higher calibre of opposition, rebounding from a loss to Liam Paro last year with a narrow majority decision win over Alberto Puello. Known for his relentless pressure and knockout power, the Puerto Rican champion will be looking to make a statement against his unbeaten challenger when the bell rings in January.
