Following their disappointing exit from the last T20 World Cup, where the Sri Lankan national cricket team finished third in their group, the decision was made to change head coaches.
Sanath Jayasuriya has been appointed as the full-time head coach of the Sri Lankan team, a role he will hold until the T20 World Cup in 2026. He has been serving as interim head coach since July 2024, and this new appointment formalizes his position.
Under Jayasuriya’s leadership, Sri Lanka has experienced significant success, including their first ODI bilateral series victory over India in 27 years, an away Test win against England for the first time in a decade, and a recent 2-0 home Test series triumph against New Zealand. These achievements have bolstered the team’s chances of qualifying for the upcoming World Cup.
“The Executive Committee of Sri Lanka Cricket made this decision in light of the team’s strong performances in recent series against India, England, and New Zealand, where Jayasuriya was in charge as interim head coach,” the board announced.
Praveen Jayawickrama of Sri Lanka has been suspended for one year after admitting to obstructing an anti-corruption investigation.
