The WDF Welsh Open witnessed a historic breakthrough last weekend as 14-year-old Mitchell Lawrie produced a sensational run to claim the senior title, marking himself as one of darts’ brightest rising stars.
The young Scot followed in the footsteps of prodigies Kaya Baysal and Luke Littler, both of whom also lifted senior WDF titles at the age of 14. Lawrie’s victory places him in elite company and signals the arrival of yet another generational talent.
Dominant Run to Glory
Lawrie’s path to the title was nothing short of remarkable. He began his campaign with convincing wins over George Smith (4–1) and John Doocey (4–0), before seeing off Ben Watkins (4–2), Dylan Cowley (4–2), Callum Francis (4–3), and Luke Smith (4–2) to reach the quarter-finals.
There, he faced one of the toughest tests of the weekend—former WDF World Champion Neil Duff. Lawrie edged the Northern Irishman 4–3 in a high-quality affair, then swept past Cavan Phillips 5–1 in the semi-final to book his place in the final.
In the title match, Lawrie delivered his most dominant performance yet, dismantling veteran Darren Johnson 6–1 to lift the trophy in emphatic style.
Joining a Legendary Roll of Honour
The Welsh Open has long been a prestigious stop on the WDF calendar, boasting a winner’s list that includes legends such as Eric Bristow, John Lowe, Dennis Priestley, Richie Burnett, Gary Anderson, Michael van Gerwen, Glen Durrant, and, more recently, Luke Littler in 2022. Lawrie’s name now stands proudly alongside theirs.
Double Delight in Wales
Lawrie’s weekend success didn’t stop at the senior title. He also cruised to victory in the boys’ competition, dropping just one leg en route. He notched wins over Jack Powell (3–0), Cori Wiltshire (3–0), Luke Oldham (3–0), Dylan Cowley (3–1), and capped it off with a dominant 4–0 win over Kaya Baysal in the final.
At just 14, Mitchell Lawrie has already written his name into the history books—and if this weekend was any indication, it’s just the beginning of what promises to be an extraordinary career.
