Raymond van Barneveld made a solid run to the quarterfinals of the 2025 Dutch Darts Masters at the World Series of Darts last weekend in Den Bosch. Despite showing great determination and skill, the five-time world champion eventually lost a thrilling 6-5 match to Stephen Bunting.

In the first round, Van Barneveld caused a small upset by defeating Premier League Darts star Chris Dobey 6-5, highlighted by a stunning 144 checkout, which secured the victory in style. His performance caught the attention of Vincent van der Voort, who praised the Dutch legend for his technique and mental approach. “You can still see the amazing talent he has,” Van der Voort reflected on the ‘Darts Draait Door‘ podcast. “In terms of technique and pitch, it’s all right. I think in terms of level, he was pretty good, especially considering he’s been pretty lousy for a month.”

Van der Voort also noticed a significant improvement in Van Barneveld’s attitude, particularly his positivity on stage. He commented, “In the beginning of the year you still feel like it, then it all still goes. But you have to have this feeling in April/May and towards the end of the year as well.” He added that while Van Barneveld still has incredible potential, it’s difficult to change someone’s mindset completely, especially when facing the reality of not belonging to the elite ranks anymore.

“He’s a very great champion, but he just doesn’t belong there anymore,” Van der Voort continued. “He can still give any player a hard time and win from anyone. Then go for that. Pick your results. Maybe it’s better for him to pass up a tournament once in a while.”

After his disappointing exit from the 2025 PDC World Darts Championship (where Van Barneveld lost to Nick Kenny in the opening match), he reflected on his future in the sport. Van Barneveld admitted that he had a serious conversation with himself about his career and performance, acknowledging that continuing in the same way could detract from his legacy. Van der Voort, too, believes Van Barneveld still belongs among the best, saying, “He still belongs among the best five darters ever.”

Despite the challenges he faces, Van Barneveld’s journey remains full of passion and potential, and fans continue to celebrate his remarkable career and enduring talent.
