Jonny Clayton has advanced to the second round of the 2024 European Championship in Dortmund, Germany, after defeating Chris Dobey 6-4 in a high-quality opening match. This victory sets up a clash with world champion and current world number one, Luke Humphries.
Clayton showcased his skills by hitting seven 180s during the match. He quickly established control, breaking Dobey’s throw to go 2-0 up and maintaining that lead throughout. Although he missed opportunities to extend his advantage to 4-1, Clayton still secured key legs, including a 96 checkout that put him at 4-2. A 76 checkout brought him one leg away from victory, which he sealed with an 84 checkout on his next throw.
“It’s tough to play against a good mate like Chris Dobey,” Clayton said in his post-match press conference. “We sit at the same table, and I know what he’s capable of—he’s one of the biggest 180 throwers on the circuit. I broke him early, but holding my throw was crucial. I’m just happy to get the win, especially against someone of Chris’s caliber.”
Clayton acknowledged that he hasn’t been at his best over the past year, but with a renewed smile, he’s regaining confidence. “I’ve had a tough time, but I’m starting to win games again. It puts a smile on my face and boosts my confidence,” he said optimistically. With the World Darts Championship approaching in just under two months, Clayton feels he’s hitting form at the right time. “I’ve got that fire back in my belly, and who knows what that can lead to,” he concluded.
