Peter Wright has been experiencing a significant decline, recently falling to 14th in the PDC Order of Merit. His performance at the recent European Championship marked a new low for the 54-year-old Scot, as he was eliminated in the first round with a staggering 6-0 defeat to Jermaine Wattimena, failing to even achieve a 75 average. Fellow professional Vincent van der Voort suggests that this could signify the end of “Snakebite.”
While there have been moments of brilliance for the former world champion this year, overall, Wright has struggled through a challenging campaign. “That man is impossible to follow,” Van der Voort said on the Sportnieuws.nl podcast Darts Draait Door.
“It’s been discussed so many times, but I genuinely wonder what’s going on in his head. For the past year and a half, he’s really been struggling. Occasionally he wins a tournament because he’s an incredibly talented player, but even when he’s doing well, he still changes darts.”
Van der Voort expressed his frustration with Wright’s ongoing challenges, suggesting that if he continues down this path, his career may soon be over. “At some point, you just have to stop talking about it. But then in a year, we might have lost him too. We’re dealing with someone who—let’s keep it clean—doesn’t seem to have much sense.”
Wright is scheduled to compete in the coming weeks at the Grand Slam of Darts, Players Championship Finals, and World Darts Championship, providing him an opportunity to reverse his troubling trend. Meanwhile, Van der Voort is contemplating a sabbatical in 2025, which could also signal the end of his own career as he navigates his own slip down the rankings.
