A Harrogate school is expanding its range of activities for energetic students by launching a new sport.
Ashville College has introduced an Equestrian Club, providing talented riders with the opportunity to compete in regional and national competitions. With a long-standing tradition of nurturing top sports talent, the Equestrian Club joins a diverse array of co-curricular activities, including traditional sports like rugby and tennis, as well as international competitions.
Next summer, the school will embark on a Sports Tour to South Africa.
The Equestrian Club was inspired by students who compete outside of school and wanted to channel their enthusiasm within the Ashville College framework. Mrs. Stephanie Lightbody, Assistant Director of Sport, noted that many parents have a longstanding involvement in equestrian activities. “We now have students from Year 5 to Year 13 participating in dressage, show jumping, eventing, and more,” she explained. “They wanted to form a team to compete alongside their school friends, and we’ll also provide classes focused on fitness for riding across various age groups.”
Mrs. Rhiannon Wilkinson, Head of Ashville, emphasized the life lessons that riding imparts. “We are proud to add this to our already impressive range of sports,” she said. “Riding instills a sense of responsibility and discipline, essential skills for life. It also teaches students how to manage their time effectively alongside their academic commitments.”
With some exceptionally talented young riders, Ashville College is poised to represent Yorkshire in competitions across the country.
