Lionel Messi played a pivotal role in Inter Miami’s 2-1 victory over Philadelphia Union, scoring the decisive goal to propel the team to the top of the MLS Eastern Conference.
Coming on as a substitute in the second half, Messi found the net just two minutes later. After receiving a pass from Luis Suarez inside the penalty box, he expertly finished with his right foot, sending the ball past two Philadelphia defenders. This marked his second goal in three matches this MLS season.
Earlier in the match, Robert Taylor opened the scoring in the 23rd minute with assists from Benja Kremaschi and Jordi Alba. In the second half, Messi replaced Taylor and quickly extended the lead, thanks to assists from Suarez and Fafà Picault. Philadelphia pulled one back in the 80th minute through Daniel Gazdag, but it wasn’t enough to prevent defeat.
Inter Miami remains in impressive form, extending their unbeaten streak to nine matches across all competitions, including the CONCACAF Champions League.
Looking ahead, the team is set to face Los Angeles FC in the CONCACAF Champions League quarterfinals on Wednesday evening.
