South Africa’s captain, Ronwen Williams, says his team is getting closer to ending their winless streak against Nigeria’s Super Eagles.
Historically, Bafana Bafana have managed just two wins in 17 matches against Nigeria. Despite coming close in recent encounters, they have yet to secure a victory.
The last two meetings were tightly contested. At the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, Nigeria edged South Africa 4-3 on penalties in the semi-finals. More recently, the teams played out a 1-1 draw in September 2024.
Williams, the Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper, expressed optimism ahead of their next clash. “We’re getting closer and closer to beating them. We saw it at AFCON, we saw it when we played them away in Nigeria. Hopefully, we can take that extra step and change the narrative,” Williams told reporters.
