Former Real Madrid defender, Rafael Alkorta has issued a warning to Vinicius Jr. regarding his ongoing contract negotiations with club president Florentino Perez, SPORTS MACRO reports.
Alkorta cautioned the Brazilian star to tread carefully or risk facing a similar fate to club legend Sergio Ramos, whose contract offer was famously withdrawn by Perez in 2023 despite his decorated career at the Santiago Bernabéu.
He also expressed concerns about Vinicius’ recent performances, suggesting that the forward has struggled since being moved from his natural left-wing position to a more central role—part of former manager Carlo Ancelotti’s tactical shift to accommodate Kylian Mbappé.
“Trying to squeeze Florentino Perez can go wrong. Let’s remember what happened with Ramos,” Alkorta said, as quoted by Madrid Universal. He added that such contract disputes can be “poisonous.”
“Florentino is affectionate, but he doesn’t hesitate to make tough decisions,” Alkorta continued. “Since they took him off the left wing, I haven’t seen him well. Playing with Mbappé has cost him.”
Vinicius Jr’s current contract with Real Madrid runs until 2027, but discussions over a possible extension have reportedly been ongoing for several months.
