Banyana Banyana face a tough challenge in their bid to qualify for next year’s WAFCON, with four key players and head coach Desiree Ellis absent for their qualifier in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The South African women’s national team will be led by assistant coach Thinasonke Mbuli for the first leg at Pentecost Martyrs Stadium, scheduled for 6 pm.
The quartet of Mexico-based players—Hilda Magaia, Thembi Kgatlana, Amogelang Motau, and Sinoxolo Cesane—are all unavailable for this match.
The situation with coach Ellis remains unclear. While SAFA CEO Lydia Monyepao confirmed that Ellis’s contract was approved by the association, the reason behind the contract not being signed yet is still undisclosed, with Monyepao distancing herself from the matter.
As a result, Mbuli steps in to manage the team for this crucial two-legged qualifier.
The second leg takes place next Tuesday at FNB Stadium, where Banyana Banyana are expected to have their full squad, including the returning Mexico-based players.
