As Sporting fans argue that Viktor Gyökeres should command a transfer fee on par with Darwin Núñez’s, former Benfica captain Diamantino Miranda has dampened the idea with a now-viral remark.
Speaking to CMTV, Miranda humorously responded: “One thing is shopping at Gucci, another is shopping at Primark. That’s life.” His comment, which was picked up by Bancada, was a jab at the belief that Sporting could secure a transfer fee comparable to Benfica’s €85 million deal for Darwin Núñez with just one player.
Miranda further stated that Sporting would “need to sell three or four at once” to reach that amount. Darwin’s €75 million move to Liverpool, plus potential bonuses, was justified by his impressive record of 48 goals in 85 appearances for Benfica and his standout performances in the Champions League.
While Gyökeres is enjoying an exceptional season in Lisbon, some critics argue he lacks the European experience that contributed to Darwin’s higher market value. According to Miranda, blockbuster transfers like Darwin’s are rare and not easily replicated, particularly not in “bulk packaging.”
