French striker Jean-Philippe Mateta has found the back of the net 30 times over the past two seasons for Crystal Palace—an impressive tally for a player at a mid-table club. But according to Jamie Carragher, his time with the Eagles may be nearing its end.
The Sky Sports pundit believes Mateta has outgrown the Selhurst Park side, and that clubs with Champions League ambitions will be watching closely.
“I think other clubs will be looking at him,” Carragher said in the Sky Sports studio. “I hate to say it, because I know Palace fans won’t want to hear it, but over the last two seasons, he’s been more than just a regular player—he’s been scoring serious goals.
Can he take that next step, to a team chasing Champions League football? Palace, as solid as they are, are a step below that level. I think Mateta is absolutely brilliant.”
