London’s Chelsea, though currently struggling, is still in the hunt for a Champions League spot. However, Enzo Maresca’s side may not secure a place in the competition, despite qualifying on sporting merit.
The issue arises from the fact that Strasbourg, a French club with the same ownership as Chelsea, is also competing for a Champions League spot. The French side has a strong chance of finishing second in Ligue 1.
Under UEFA regulations, if two teams with the same ownership qualify for the Champions League, the club that finishes higher in their respective league will represent their owners in Europe’s premier club competition.
Therefore, if Chelsea were to finish fourth and Strasbourg third, it would be the French club playing in the Champions League. On the other hand, if Chelsea finishes ahead of Strasbourg, the Blues would secure their spot in the competition.
Reminder: Maresca previously canceled Chelsea’s day off following a defeat by the youth team.
