Japan forward Chinari Sasai credited teamwork and unity for their victory over Nigeria. The former champions secured a 2-1 win against the Falconets in Bogota on Friday morning.
Miyu Matsunaga and Maya Hijikata found the back of the net for Japan, while Shola Shobowale scored Nigeria’s only goal in the closely contested match.
“We knew Nigeria was physically stronger and faster, but we stayed focused, scored the first goal, and then the second,” Sasai told FIFA.com. “I’m very happy because this victory was a team effort.”
Japan will take on Spain in the quarter-finals on Sunday.
