Miguel Herrera is set to travel to Rosario to meet with Keylor Navas in an effort to convince the veteran goalkeeper to come out of international retirement. Navas, who currently plays for Newell’s Old Boys, stepped away from the Costa Rica national team in May of last year. However, Herrera believes that Navas’ decision may not have been entirely motivated by sporting reasons.
In an interview with ESPN, Herrera shared his plans to meet with Navas face-to-face: “The only international player we’re visiting is Keylor Navas. We want to discuss the next steps with him.”
He added, “We have a detailed conversation planned. There are still unresolved issues, including the reasons behind his decision to step away from the national team.”
In March, Navas responded to Herrera’s remarks. While he praised Herrera’s experience and football knowledge, he downplayed the notion of a reunion strictly related to the national team. “He can say whatever he wants. He’s a very smart coach, he knows a lot about football… If he has something to discuss in Argentina, I think we’ll talk. But it doesn’t necessarily have to be about the national team.”
The 38-year-old goalkeeper, formerly of Real Madrid, emphasized that he’s enjoying a quieter life in Rosario and isn’t keen on returning to the intense spotlight of international football.
