Arsenal goalkeeper, David Raya has suggested that the new Premier League ball could be to blame for his inability to save Dominik Szoboszlai’s long-range free-kick in Sunday’s clash at Anfield.
Szoboszlai’s sensational 83rd-minute strike sealed a 1-0 victory for Liverpool, helping the Reds maintain their perfect start to the season and take an early lead in the Premier League title race.
The Hungarian midfielder unleashed a powerful shot from over 30 yards out, beating Raya, who reacted too late to prevent the ball from finding the top corner.
Speaking to Sky Sports after the match, Raya pointed to the characteristics of the new match ball—designed by Puma—as a factor in the goal.
“I think it’s a hell of a strike. I remember the ball moving a lot and swerving away from me,” said the Spanish international. “With the new balls and everything, we still have to adapt. It’s different from the Nike ball we’ve used for years—the grip, the flight, the way it kicks—everything feels different.”
Raya admitted his frustration at not being able to make the save but vowed to improve. “We just have to adapt. It’s the same for everybody,” he added.
Liverpool, the defending champions, have now extended their winning streak at the start of the season. Arsenal, meanwhile, continue their pursuit of a long-awaited league title after finishing second in each of the past three campaigns—twice behind Manchester City and once behind Liverpool.
