Sir Alex Ferguson has revealed that his decision to retire from Manchester United was significantly influenced by a desire to spend more time with his wife, Cathy, following the death of her sister.
Ferguson stepped down after an illustrious 27-year tenure at Old Trafford in 2013, during which he secured 13 Premier League titles and two Champions League trophies.
Reflecting on his retirement during an appearance on McCoist’s podcast, Ally’s Social Club, Ferguson explained, “Cathy’s sister had died the previous October, and she was definitely lost.
At Christmas, I told her, ‘Look, I’m going to retire at the end of the season.’ I could see that she was delighted because she had been on her own for a while.”
Ferguson acknowledged Cathy’s sacrifices over the years, noting, “[She] had given her life to me, looking after me because of my job and raising the kids. When I said I was going to retire, I could tell from her body language that she was really happy.”
