Former Chelsea and England midfielder, Joe Cole has expressed doubts about Arsenal’s summer signing Viktor Gyökeres, suggesting the Gunners may have missed an opportunity by not securing Nigeria international Victor Osimhen instead.
Speaking to Hayters TV, Cole questioned whether Gyökeres is the proven forward Arsenal need as they aim to challenge for major honours in the upcoming season.
“He [Mikel Arteta] has got a centre-forward [Gyökeres] in, but there is still a question mark there,” said Cole. “It is not like you are bringing in a player like… if Arsenal would’ve gone and signed [Victor] Osimhen, who I’ve seen do it in Italy and in Turkey.
This kid [Viktor Gyökeres], there is still a question mark. I think he is going to be alright.”
Arsenal signed Gyökeres from Portuguese side Sporting CP, where he enjoyed a prolific season, while Osimhen, previously linked with a move to the Emirates, eventually completed a surprise transfer to Galatasaray.
While Cole admitted Gyökeres has potential, his comments highlight the pressure the Swedish forward will face in proving himself at the highest level, particularly with Arsenal aiming to push Manchester City and Liverpool for the Premier League title this season.
