Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has issued a challenge to Antony, emphasizing that he must fight for his spot in the lineup after falling down the pecking order at Old Trafford.
Ten Hag was determined to bring Antony from Ajax during his initial transfer window at United, spending an initial £82m to secure the Brazilian winger. However, Antony’s impact has been underwhelming, with just 11 goals and five assists in 83 appearances for the club across all competitions.
This season, Amad Diallo and Alejandro Garnacho have been preferred for the right wing position, and Ten Hag’s stance on Antony has shifted slightly ahead of Tuesday’s Carabao Cup match against Barnsley.
“He’s impatient and wants to play,” Ten Hag said of Antony. “But in top-level football, the team with the best chance to win is selected based on its dynamic and chemistry. Players must compete for their positions.”
Ten Hag noted that Diallo and Garnacho have been performing well and that Antony needs to surpass them by proving himself in training.
In related news, the Manchester Evening News reports that United plans to offer Amad Diallo a new contract in the coming months. Diallo’s current deal runs until 2025, but the club aims to secure him for the long term by extending his contract.
