Peruvian forward Paolo Guerrero prevailed in a legal dispute with his former club, Flamengo, regarding image rights payments during his 2018 suspension. A Brazilian appeals court rejected Flamengo’s attempt to reclaim R$1.8 million paid to Guerrero during his six-month doping ban for benzoylecgonine. Consequently, Flamengo is also liable for legal fees amounting to 15% of the claim’s value.
The court’s decision affirmed that Guerrero is not required to return the disputed funds. Following his ban, Guerrero played seven matches for Flamengo before transferring to Internacional, concluding his time with the Rio de Janeiro club.
Guerrero, who joined Flamengo in 2015 after a successful period at Corinthians, became a significant player, notably winning the 2017 Campeonato Carioca. Despite his controversial exit, his on-field contributions remained notable.
Separately, Flamengo is scheduled to begin their 2025 Brazilian league season this Saturday by hosting Internacional at the Maracanã, where they aim for a strong start in their title pursuit.
