Manchester United have decided to retain manager Ruben Amorim, despite the club’s humiliating Carabao Cup exit at the hands of League Two side Grimsby Town earlier this week.
The Red Devils suffered a shock defeat on Wednesday night, marking the first time in the club’s history they’ve been knocked out of a competition by a fourth-tier team.
Grimsby took a surprising two-goal lead into halftime, but late goals from Bryan Mbeumo and Harry Maguire forced a penalty shoot-out. However, it was the underdogs who prevailed, advancing to the third round.
The defeat continues a disappointing start to the season for United, who have failed to win any of their first three matches under Amorim’s leadership.
Despite growing pressure and speculation about the Portuguese manager’s future, BBC Sport reports that the club’s board remains supportive of Amorim. The hierarchy is reportedly keen to avoid making any reactionary decisions, preferring to give the 40-year-old time to turn things around.
