Barcelona currently has six goalkeepers on their roster, but with Marc-André ter Stegen sidelined due to injury, they are left without a dependable option to guard the net. To remedy this situation, they have reached out to Wojciech Szczęsny, inviting him to come out of retirement. However, the club is also exploring long-term goalkeeper options and has expressed interest in Bart Verbruggen from Brighton.
Following the news of Ter Stegen’s long-term injury, Barcelona was hesitant to depend on Iñaki Peña as their primary goalkeeper and contacted their former keeper, Szczęsny, about a possible return.
Nevertheless, the club recognizes that Szczęsny is only a short-term fix. At 32, Ter Stegen’s status as the first-choice keeper could be in jeopardy, even with his contract running until 2028, especially given potential interest from clubs in the Middle East.
To plan for this eventuality, Barcelona has been actively looking for alternatives, and according to Mundo Deportivo, Bart Verbruggen has emerged as a leading candidate. The Dutch goalkeeper has been impressive for Brighton and is now the first-choice keeper for the Netherlands. His market value is currently estimated at €22 million, according to Transfermarkt.
Wojciech Szczęsny, while already signed with Barcelona, has yet to make his debut. His first appearance could be in La Liga against Sevilla or in the UEFA Champions League match against Bayern Munich.
