The Premier League has provided clarification on the decision to overturn a penalty call in Manchester United’s dramatic 3-2 victory over Burnley on Saturday — their first win of the season.
United took the lead after a Josh Cullen own goal, only for Burnley to respond with a close-range finish from Lyle Foster. Bryan Mbeumo restored the hosts’ advantage, but Burnley equalized again through Jadon Anthony.
In stoppage time, controversy arose when Amad Diallo’s shirt was pulled in the box. Initially, referee Sam Barrott waved play on, but following a VAR review, he was advised to check the incident on the pitchside monitor.
After reviewing the footage, Barrott reversed his decision and awarded a penalty to Manchester United. Bruno Fernandes stepped up and converted the spot-kick, securing all three points for the Red Devils at Old Trafford.
In a statement on X (formerly Twitter), the Premier League Match Centre explained:
“After VAR review, the referee overturned the original decision of no penalty to Manchester United.
Referee announcement: ‘After review, Burnley eleven has a sustained pulling action on Manchester United sixteen, which results in a penalty kick. My final decision is yellow card and penalty.’”
