The England national team has officially announced Thomas Tuchel as the permanent successor to Gareth Southgate.
Former England and Manchester United star Wayne Rooney shared his thoughts on the FA’s decision, stating, “I’m surprised. He’s a very good coach, but I’m surprised the FA hired him. I wish him all the best and hope he does well. What the FA has built over the last 10–15 years has provided a great platform for young coaches, so I’m surprised they didn’t go with someone from within. But, as I said, they’ve made their decision, and I wish him the best. I hope he can handle all the challenges.”
Tuchel’s contract extends until the end of the 2026 World Cup, with an option for an additional qualification cycle. This will be his first experience coaching a national team; his last position was at Bayern Munich, and he previously managed Chelsea, PSG, and Borussia Dortmund.
After Gareth Southgate’s departure, England U-21 head coach Lee Carsley served as the interim manager, leading the team to nine points in four Nations League matches.
