In February 2022, FIFA suspended Russian clubs and the national team in response to the military invasion of Ukraine. However, Gianni Infantino has now expressed hope that Russia’s return to international football will happen soon.
At the UEFA and FIFA congress, Infantino emphasized that the organization’s goal is to bring countries and fans together through football, especially in today’s divided world.
“As peace talks in Ukraine continue, I hope that soon we can turn the page and bring Russia back to international football. This would mean that everything is resolved,” Infantino said.
He further added that football should be a force for unity, not division.
