Former Manchester City footballer Joey Barton has been found guilty of assaulting his wife.
According to The Mirror, Barton was sentenced to a suspended prison term at Westminster Magistrates’ Court after being convicted of attacking his wife at their home in June 2021.
Barton reportedly kicked his wife in the head multiple times, causing bruises and a broken nose. He received a 12-week suspended prison sentence. A mitigating factor in the case was that both Barton and his wife were intoxicated at the time of the incident.
In court, Georgia Barton was unable to confirm whether all of her injuries were caused by her husband or if some were due to a fall from heavy intoxication.
As a reminder, it was previously reported that in 2021, Joey and Georgia Barton drank 4-5 bottles of wine during dinner with two other couples, which led to an argument between the couple.
Following the assault, Georgia Barton suffered a nosebleed and a bump on her forehead. She called the police and reported that her husband had hit her, though she also stated that this was the first time such an incident had occurred.
Joey Barton played for Manchester City from 2002 to 2007, making 150 appearances and scoring 15 goals for the club.
