Napoli head coach Antonio Conte has shouldered the blame for his team’s heavy 6–2 defeat to PSV in the third round of the UEFA Champions League, calling for a complete reset in the wake of the disappointing result.
Speaking after the match, Conte didn’t mince words about the club’s current situation:
“I’m disappointed. Results like this don’t happen by accident. We need to make sure this defeat becomes a turning point,” he said. “Last year, we won the league — an incredible achievement. Many players exceeded expectations. But now we’re in Europe, and the context is different. There are many new players — perhaps too many. I’ve said before this season would be difficult. We need to work hard and be prepared for more challenges.”
The defeat leaves Napoli sitting 22nd in the overall Champions League group stage standings, with just 3 points from 3 matches.
The loss also sees Napoli match an unwanted record previously held by Roma — the last Italian club to concede six goals in a Champions League match, back in 2015 when they were overwhelmed 6–1 by Barcelona.
