In an unexpected turn, UEFA has suspended Polish referees Bartosz Frankowski and Tomasz Musiał for the remainder of the 2024-2025 season. This decision follows a review of an incident that took place just hours before the Champions League qualifying match between Dynamo Kyiv and Rangers.
The two officials were reportedly detained by police after they, along with a third party, attempted to steal a road sign. Both referees were found with blood alcohol levels exceeding 1.5‰.
Frankowski was scheduled to serve as the video assistant referee, with Musiał as his assistant for the high-stakes match held in Lublin, Poland, a neutral venue selected due to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Following the incident, the Polish Football Association replaced the pair with Tomasz Kwiatkowski and Paweł Malec.
The match concluded in a draw in Lublin, but Rangers took the lead in Glasgow. Ultimately, Rangers entered the Europa League, while Dynamo Kyiv joined them after a loss to RB Salzburg in the playoff round.
