Italian tennis star Jannik Sinner is set to finish 2024 as the world’s number one in the ATP rankings, making him the first Italian to reach this milestone and only the 19th player in history to do so.
Sinner secured his top ranking by reaching the final of the Shanghai Masters, where he defeated Czech player Tomas Machac with a score of 6-4, 7-5. Just ten days earlier, he lost in the Beijing final to Carlos Alcaraz, but now he has another opportunity to claim a prestigious title.
In the final, he will face off against the legendary Serbian Novak Djokovic, who advanced by overcoming Taylor Fritz in the semifinals.
In August, the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) reached a decision regarding Sinner’s case, concluding that he unintentionally came into contact with a banned substance. However, the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) plans to appeal this decision.
