Today’s matches at the Masters and WTA 1000 tournaments in Madrid were interrupted or postponed due to a massive power outage that affected large parts of Spain, Portugal, France, and Italy. The timeline for restoring power has now been provided.
Eduardo Prieto, Spain’s director of energy operations, stated that a swift resolution is unlikely.
“This is a problem that cannot be fixed in a few hours. It will take between 6 to 10 hours,” Prieto explained.
Authorities reported that around 10 GW of power was lost from the grid in just one minute, with a cyberattack suspected as the cause. This outage is being considered one of the largest in European history.
Note: Following his departure from the Madrid tournament, tennis legend Novak Djokovic hinted at the possibility of retirement.
