Polish tennis player Iga Świątek, ranked second in the world, has unexpectedly been eliminated from the Miami Open.
In the quarterfinals, Świątek, the clear favorite, was defeated by the Philippines’ Alexandra Eala, who is ranked 140th. Świątek ended her campaign after two sets, losing 2-6, 5-7, with the match lasting 1 hour and 40 minutes. Throughout the match, she committed 4 double faults and converted 5 of 9 break points.
Eala will now face either Emma Raducanu or Jessica Pegula in the semifinals.
In this year’s Miami Open, Świątek also set a remarkable record in WTA 1000 series history, reaching the round of 16 for the 25th consecutive time in such events—a streak that stands as the longest since the format’s introduction in 2009.
