Today in Shanghai, China, the final match of the ATP Masters 1000 featured world No. 1 Jannik Sinner from Italy facing off against former top-ranked player and the tournament’s most decorated champion, Novak Djokovic.
In a tightly contested first set, Sinner hit six aces but also committed fourteen unforced errors. The set went to a tiebreak, where Sinner triumphed with a score of 7-4.
As the second set began, Djokovic’s level dropped, allowing Sinner to break the Serbian’s serve and gain momentum. Despite nine unforced errors and three aces, Sinner confidently took the second set.
“It was a tough match. Playing against Novak, one of the toughest opponents, was challenging. He served very well on his first serves. I could barely return them, and the first set went to a tiebreak. But in the second set, I managed to do what I was aiming for and achieved my goal,” Sinner said during his on-court flash interview after the victory.
This match marked the ninth encounter between Jannik Sinner and Novak Djokovic, with Sinner claiming his fourth victory in their head-to-head meetings and his third consecutive win. Remarkably, this is the first time Sinner has defeated Djokovic without dropping a set.
With this victory at the Shanghai Masters, Sinner becomes the youngest champion in the tournament’s history, surpassing Andy Murray’s previous record at the age of 23 years and 58 days. Additionally, this win marks Sinner’s second consecutive ATP Masters title, following his success in Cincinnati, and adds to his earlier title in Miami this year.
