German tennis star Alexander Zverev, currently ranked second in the ATP rankings, will miss the prestigious tournament in Beijing due to a pneumonia diagnosis, which he disclosed to the German press.
Zverev reported feeling unwell as early as last week during the Rod Laver Cup. As the event progressed, he expressed to the media that he had been experiencing feverish symptoms for four days, according to ZDF. However, he chose not to share further details, citing his team’s wishes.
This isn’t the first health issue for the 27-year-old Zverev. Previously, he experienced a high pulse during the Paris Olympics, a fever at the Australian Open, and dizziness during the Olympics, where he even reported seeing four balls at once.
Looking ahead, the Beijing tournament is not the final major event of the 2024 season for Zverev. Upcoming tournaments on his schedule include those in Shanghai, Paris, the ATP Finals, and the Davis Cup Finals. As of now, he remains on the entry list for these competitions.
