Former Manchester United forward Anthony Martial is reportedly nearing an agreement to join Greek club AEK Athens on a free transfer. Martial has been a free agent since his contract with United expired at the end of June, but struggled to secure a new club during the summer.
Reports in August suggested that the Frenchman’s high wage demands deterred clubs in Europe’s top leagues, which also led to a failed return to his former club, Lyon.
More recently, a potential move to Brazilian side Flamengo collapsed, but according to Fabrizio Romano, Martial is now close to finalizing a deal with AEK.
The Greek giants were active during the summer transfer window, signing players like Erik Lamela, Roberto Pereyra, and Thomas Strakosha. They had also pursued Chelsea striker David Datro Fofana, but the deal fell through, and he joined Turkish club Goztepe instead.
Martial, now 28, will aim to revive his career at AEK after battling injuries and inconsistent form at United, where he scored 90 goals and provided 47 assists over 317 appearances.
