The model of the football Super League and basketball Euroleague is now influencing other sports, as top volleyball clubs are looking to establish their own league.
According to TVP Sport, this initiative has been in discussion within federations for some time. If the European Volleyball Confederation fails to provide satisfactory financial conditions for the CEV Champions League participants, the leading leagues may break away from the CEV to organize their own tournament.
The plan is to initially test this concept in women’s volleyball. In the coming weeks, an organization tentatively named the European Association of Clubs is expected to be announced, featuring participation from four Italian clubs, three Turkish clubs, and two clubs each from Germany, Poland, and France.
While the dissenting clubs are not seeking immediate confrontation with the CEV, they are open to constructive dialogue and reform regarding the current tournaments, which include the Champions League, CEV Cup, and Challenge Cup.
The Challenge Cup, akin to the Conference League in football, does not involve top-tier teams and has become a contentious issue for the leading leagues, which feel they are losing both money and valuable time by competing against weaker opponents.
