The 2025 FIVB Volleyball Women’s World Championship Pool C began in Chiang Mai, Thailand, with South American powerhouse Brazil and European hopefuls France both securing confident wins to start their campaigns.
Brazil dominated Greece in a straight-sets 3-0 victory (25-18, 25-15, 25-16) as they pursue their first-ever world title. Captain Gabriela “Gabi” Guimarães led the way with 18 points, supported by Júlia Bergmann’s 15 and opposite Kisy Nascimento’s 10. Despite the loss, Greece found a bright spot in 21-year-old opposite Mártha Anthoúli, who topped the scoreboard with 18 points.
Earlier, France celebrated their first World Championship appearance since 1974 with a 3-1 win over Puerto Rico (25-22, 25-18, 21-25, 25-14). Iman Ndiaye starred for the French, scoring 22 points including five aces, while captain Héléna Cazaute added 21. Despite dropping the third set, France’s balanced play and strong serving helped them close out the match.
Coach Cesar Hernandez praised the team’s composure:
“We knew there would be nerves, but the players responded well. The first win gives us confidence to face stronger challenges ahead.”
With Brazil and France both off to winning starts, excitement is building for their upcoming showdown on Sunday, a match that could shape the top of Pool C. Greece and Puerto Rico will also meet earlier that day, both seeking their first victories.
