The Volleyball Association of Maldives (VAM) marked World Volleyball Day on July 7, 2025, with a vibrant and inspiring celebration centered on empowering young players—the future of the sport. The event showcased the nation’s growing commitment to volleyball development and community engagement.
The celebration was held in the presence of esteemed guests, including Chief Guest Hon. Mohamed Tholaal, Commissioner of Sports; Mr. Ahmed Ismail, Vice President of the Maldives Olympic Committee; and Mr. Thamooh Ahmed Saeed, General Secretary of the Maldives Olympic Committee. A wide spectrum of the volleyball community gathered to commemorate the occasion, including volleyball legends, former and current national team players, coaches, referees, and young athletes representing organizations such as Blues for Volleyball, Muneez Volleyball Movement, My Sports Academy, and Pinnacle Academy.
In his keynote address, Mr. Mohamed Latheef—President of VAM, President of the Central Asian Volleyball Association (CAVA), AVC Executive Vice President, and AVC Zonal Executive Vice President—emphasized the critical importance of youth development in securing a strong future for the sport. He announced that VAM is currently developing a comprehensive youth development plan in collaboration with a highly experienced Japanese coach, aimed at nurturing young talent across the nation.
Mr. Latheef also unveiled a new initiative: a dedicated coaching course for the Atolls, with a strong focus on encouraging women’s participation. This initiative underscores VAM’s commitment to inclusivity and grassroots empowerment in volleyball.
Expressing gratitude to FIVB President Mr. Fabio Azevedo, Mr. Latheef acknowledged the global unity fostered through World Volleyball Day and echoed the FIVB President’s call to move forward “Together as One.” He also recognized AVC President Mr. Ramon Suzara for his instrumental leadership in advancing the sport throughout Asia.
Chief Guest Hon. Mohamed Tholaal delivered a motivating message to the young athletes, encouraging them to pursue their dreams with passion and perseverance, reminding them that champions are made through hard work and dedication.
The event concluded on a celebratory note with the ceremonial cutting of a specially designed cake to honor World Volleyball Day—symbolizing joy, unity, and a renewed national commitment to the growth and future of volleyball in the Maldives.
