Host nation Thailand thrilled a packed Huamark Indoor Stadium crowd in Bangkok by defeating Egypt 3-1 (25-15, 23-25, 25-15, 25-11) in their opening 2025 FIVB Volleyball Women’s World Championship Pool A match. After dropping a competitive second set, the Asian champions bounced back with strong blocking and steady defense to secure their first tournament win.
Pimpichaya Kokram led Thailand with 19 points, while Thatdao Nuekjang contributed 16 points, including four crucial blocks. Outside hitter Chatchu-On Moksri added 14 points and praised the home crowd’s energy:
“The atmosphere was amazing, and the blocks really gave us confidence. We’re happy with this start, but we know there’s room to play even better.”
Egypt, making their first World Championship appearance since 2006, took pride in capturing a set against the hosts. Nada Meawad scored 14 points, and opposite Tokka Eassa added 12. Meawad reflected, “We fought for every point. Now we just need to keep that energy from the very first serve.”
In the other Pool A matchup, the Netherlands edged Sweden in a thrilling five-set battle, 3-2 (25-27, 25-11, 25-21, 21-25, 15-9). Returning middle blocker Eline Timmerman and outside hitter Marrit Jasper helped the Dutch rally after dropping the opening set. Elles Dambrink’s clutch play in the tiebreak sealed the victory.
Dambrink said, “A first World Championship match is always tough. We stayed together as a team, and that helped us finish strong.” Despite a stellar 31-point effort from Sweden’s Isabelle Haak, the Dutch composure prevailed in the critical moments.
With wins on day one, Thailand and the Netherlands lead Pool A, while Sweden and Egypt seek their first victories. The competition resumes Sunday with Netherlands facing Egypt and Thailand taking on Sweden in another highly anticipated day of volleyball.
