The 2025 FIVB Women’s Volleyball World Championship Pool D kicked off in Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand, with the United States and Argentina each securing hard-fought victories.
The U.S. Women’s National Team opened their campaign with a 3-1 win over World Championship debutants Slovenia (25-23, 17-25, 25-22, 25-14). Slovenia pushed the Americans in the first three sets before the U.S. pulled away decisively in the fourth. Avery Skinner led the American scoring with 15 points, followed closely by her sister Madisen with 13, while Sarah Franklin and Chiaka Ogbogu contributed 10 and 8 points respectively. Head coach Erik Sullivan praised the team’s grit but called for a sharper start in future matches.
Slovenia’s Fatoumatta Sillah shone brightly with 20 points, supported by Nika Milošič (13) and Eva Zatkovič (12).
Earlier, Argentina rallied from a set down to defeat Czechia 3-1 (18-25, 25-23, 25-17, 26-24). Bianca Cugno powered the win with 25 points, while Erika Bertolino and Antonela Bulaich added 13 and 10 points. After dropping the first set, Argentina tightened its defense and staged a late comeback in a thrilling fourth set to seal the victory.
With both teams starting 1-0, the U.S. and Argentina will face off on Sunday, August 24, in a match that could be pivotal in Pool D. Slovenia and Czechia also meet that day as they seek their first tournament wins.
